Product Condition
Every pre-owned and vintage watch has a story. This guide explains how MDV Watches LLC approaches product condition, signs of age, wear, polishing, patina, service history, accessories and the details buyers should review before purchasing.
Pre-owned does not mean new.
A pre-owned watch has had a life before it reaches its next collector. Depending on age and use, a piece may show scratches, marks, polishing, bracelet wear, fading, patina or other evidence of ownership.
Vintage watches can display more pronounced age-related characteristics. These features may be desirable to collectors and are not automatically defects.
Condition should therefore be judged in context, taking into account the age, reference, materials, service history and intended use of the individual watch.
Condition is subjective.
Terms such as excellent, very good or good can be interpreted differently by different buyers. The individual description and available photographs should always be reviewed together.
What may be considered when assessing a watch.
Condition is not based on one single feature. Several visible and functional areas may contribute to the overall assessment of a piece.
Case Condition
Scratches, dents, polishing, edge definition, lug shape and other signs of use may affect the appearance and collectability of a case.
Dial & Hands
Fading, patina, spotting, aging, lume changes, service components and restoration can all influence condition and desirability.
Bracelet & Clasp
Bracelet stretch, scratches, polishing, clasp wear, missing links and replacement components may all be relevant.
Crystal & Bezel
Scratches, chips, fading, marks, replacement parts or age-related changes may be visible depending on the watch.
How common condition terms should be understood.
The exact wording used for a specific product takes priority. The descriptions below are general guidance only and are not a substitute for examining the individual listing.
Light Signs Of Use
May show limited wear consistent with careful ownership, with the overall appearance remaining particularly strong for its age.
Visible Normal Wear
May show ordinary scratches, marks, polishing or age-related wear while remaining visually presentable and appropriate for regular use.
Clear Evidence Of Use
May show more noticeable wear, scratches, aging, polishing or other characteristics associated with regular or long-term ownership.
Age can be part of the appeal.
A faded bezel, naturally aged dial, worn bracelet or developed patina can sometimes be valued precisely because it reflects the history of the watch.
Vintage condition should be judged by age and context.
A decades-old watch should not normally be expected to present exactly like a newly manufactured watch.
Dial aging, bezel fading, case wear, bracelet stretch, scratches and other characteristics may be consistent with age rather than evidence that a watch is defective.
Collectors with strict expectations about originality, polishing or patina should contact MDV Watches before purchasing.
Not every mark of age should be removed.
Patina refers broadly to visible changes that develop through time, exposure and use. On vintage watches, patina can appear on dials, hands, luminous material, bezels, cases and other components.
Some collectors actively seek attractive natural aging because it can make a piece distinctive. Others prefer cleaner or restored examples. Neither preference is universal.
Many pre-owned watches have been polished at some point.
Polishing can reduce the appearance of scratches and restore shine, but it can also alter original case lines, edges and surfaces depending on how heavily or frequently it has been performed.
The full polishing history of an older watch may not always be known, particularly where complete service records are unavailable.
If an unpolished or minimally polished case is essential to your collecting criteria, contact MDV Watches before purchase.
Polishing may affect:
- Case edge definition
- Lug thickness
- Surface finishing
- Sharpness of transitions
- Collector preference
- Perceived originality
Bracelet condition can vary significantly.
Metal bracelets naturally develop scratches and wear. Older bracelets can also develop movement between the links commonly referred to as bracelet stretch.
Stretch
Older bracelets may show increased movement between links from prolonged wear.
Sizing
The number of included links can affect the maximum wrist size the bracelet will accommodate.
Replacement Straps
A leather, rubber or textile strap may be a replacement unless specifically represented otherwise.
Age changes expectations.
Original manufacturer depth ratings should not automatically be treated as current guarantees on a pre-owned or vintage watch.
Do not assume vintage water resistance.
Seals, gaskets, crowns, crystals and cases can change over time. Unless a specific current water-resistance capability is expressly stated for the individual watch, customers should not assume that an older watch remains suitable for swimming, showering or immersion.
Where water resistance is important, appropriate testing and servicing may be advisable before exposure to water.
Not every watch comes with complete service records.
A pre-owned watch may have been serviced one or more times during its life. Unless service history is specifically documented or described, customers should not assume that a complete historical service record is available.
Service can also involve replacement components. A genuine service replacement may improve functionality while changing the originality of a particular component.
Product Authenticity Policy →Only assume what the listing says is included.
Pre-owned watches may be offered as watch-only or with some combination of box, papers, warranty card, manuals, tags, spare links, service documentation or other accessories.
Accessories should not be assumed to be original to the watch unless this is expressly represented. Packaging and documents can also show age or wear.
The photographs are part of the condition information.
A written description cannot practically list every small scratch, mark or age-related characteristic on a pre-owned watch. Customers should therefore examine all available photographs before purchasing.

Ask Questions
Contact MDV Watches before ordering if any detail needs clarification.
Condition and authenticity answer different questions.
Condition concerns how a product currently presents and the extent of wear, aging, servicing or restoration.
Authenticity concerns whether the watch is genuinely represented as the identified product and how known original, service or aftermarket components are understood.
Read Product Authenticity Policy →A watch can be:
- Authentic and heavily worn
- Authentic and recently polished
- Authentic with service parts
- Authentic with disclosed aftermarket parts
- Authentic with significant vintage patina
If a condition detail matters to you, ask before purchase.
Collectors can have very different expectations. If you require a watch to be unpolished, free from a particular type of wear, fitted with a certain bracelet, accompanied by specific accessories or showing a particular type of patina, contact MDV Watches before completing the order.
Do not assume a characteristic that is not expressly stated in the listing.
Concerned about the condition of a delivered watch?
If you believe a product materially differs from the condition represented in the listing, contact MDV Watches promptly with your order number and a clear description of the concern.
Before arranging polishing, repair, alteration, sizing or other third-party work, review the applicable return and warranty terms because outside work may affect the ability to evaluate the product in the condition in which it was delivered.
Common condition questions.
Does pre-owned mean the watch will have scratches?
It may. Pre-owned watches commonly show signs of previous use. The degree of wear varies by piece.
Does vintage patina mean the watch is damaged?
Not necessarily. Patina can be a natural result of aging and is often valued by vintage collectors.
Can MDV Watches guarantee that a vintage watch has never been polished?
Only where such information is specifically established and represented. Complete polishing history may not always be available for an older watch.
Are all scratches listed individually?
Not necessarily. Customers should consider the written description together with all available product photographs.
Does original manufacturer water resistance still apply?
It should not automatically be assumed on a pre-owned or vintage watch unless a current capability is specifically represented.
